Welcome to Springfield Sports Academy! We are a public charter school for competitive sports and academics serving grades K-7.
Our mission is to promote the academic, emotional, and physical development of our students through the promotion of teamwork, sportsmanship and athletic competition. By developing these skills, student-athletes will become confident and capable contributing members of our community.
We believe family, fitness, and academics create the best kind of childhood & healthiest foundation for a life well-lived. We teach core academic subjects in the mornings, reserving afternoons for fitness & for students to pursue special interests like competitive sports or art.
• Academics – we teach an Ohio Standards-based curriculum and individualize instruction to each student by assessing students on a bi-weekly schedule to know if a student is working ahead, falling behind, or right on track. We teach our core subjects of English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies & Science every morning.
• Fitness & Extracurriculars– all students participate in our afternoon PE program which includes Health topics & Fitness activities. In addition to general PE, students can choose to play sports or participate in Art classes.
• Family – we value families, partnership & participation—within the school community & at home. All sports team practices and most games are scheduled during the school day to keep evenings free for family time.

Amy Fugate, Principal
Amy Fugate brings a wealth of experience to the role, with a career spanning over three decades in education and leadership. A proud native of Yellow Springs, Ohio, Fugate graduated from Yellow Springs High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree in biology from Wright State University.
Her career began in Clark County, followed by a 35-year tenure at Huber Heights City Schools. During her time there, she held various roles, including varsity girls’ soccer coach and varsity girls’ golf coach, and served as an academic mentor, union representative, and union president. She was also on the OEA board of directors for six years. After retiring in 2023, she was appointed to the State Board of Education, where she served until June 2025, when she accepted the principal position at Springfield Sports Academy.
Fugate’s vision is to create a safe and nurturing environment where students can become leaders, emphasizing that success in sports and academics requires good grades, a positive attitude, and a strong support system. A passionate sports fan, she loves University of Kentucky basketball, Notre Dame football, and Ohio State football. She played soccer in college and enjoys watching track and field, tennis, golf, and baseball. Outside of sports, she cherishes time with her family, including her children and grandson, and lives by the motto: “God, family, and Sports.”
Dr. Chad Carr, Executive Vice President
Dr. Chad Carr is the creator of the Blitz™ Academic Model and joined ACCEL Schools in 2015 with over 27 years of experience as a K-12 educator, coach, principal, and superintendent of schools in Ohio and Kentucky. Prior to joining ACCEL Schools, Dr. Carr served as Executive Vice President of Mosaica Education, where he turned around failing charter schools in Ohio. Dr. Carr holds a Ph.D. in Education from Morehead State University and three Master’s degrees in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, and Administration from the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University.

The leadership team at ACCEL Schools has a combined 1000+ years of experience as global school management operators with expertise in curriculum research and design, assessment, student support services, and education consulting. Our entire team fundamentally believes that all children deserve a great education and students should be supported as they pursue a wide variety of post-secondary options.
